Keys Under the Sofa is an exhibition of artists Cynthia Delaney Suwito, Geraldine Kang, Jaxton Su, Woong Soak Teng and Yang Jie in our store at Hock Siong.
Drawing from our furniture shop as a site of engagement, the artists explore and excavate the symbolic meanings and physical significance of furniture, unearth family and workplace narratives, play with spatial poetics and constructs, and understand the preservation and distribution of preloved objects. Each artist has an interdisciplinary practice, which collectively spans a wide spectrum of media including photography, kinetic sculpture, video art, installation, painting, text and participatory methods.
The exhibition is accompanied by public programmes including an artist talk, a film dialogue and a creative repair kintsugi workshop.
This exhibition runs from 19 Jan to 18 Feb 2024
Admission is free

Modern Kintsugi and Creative Repair Workshop with Yellow Thatchery
We all had our favourite cup or dish chipped and broken at some point—often leading to the disposal of something that was deeply cherished. In this workshop, we will introduce learners to the craft and aesthetics of Kintsugi then mend your beloved ceramic wares using modern resins and
adhesives.
Through this 2-hour session, participants will learn about the materials and techniques used in modern Kintsugi to perform a repair on ceramic ware.
Participants are advised to bring
their own broken or damaged ceramic ware or purchase one from Hock Siong. The artist will then walk them through step by step in the repair process to either 1) repair the broken ware or, 2) if the damage is severe, creatively rebuild it into
something else entirely else.
Limited to 10 participants per session
Fees are $20 per participant
Participants are to bring their ceramics or purchase on-site.

After Hours at Hock Siong
Join us for the closing reception of the exhibition, where amidst the assortment of second-hand furniture, vintage goods and antique keepsakes, we reflect and muse on the themes and sentiments of the exhibition: the social life of material objects, our emotional attachments to them, and the
way they shape us and our lives.
We invite you to bring an
object from home and share its story. The artists, curator and Hock Siong & Co. team will also be in attendance.
